Micron Ratings & Particle Filtration Dynamics
A comprehensive reference on the micron scale (µm), pore opening calculations, nominal versus absolute retention metrics, and wire mesh sizing guidelines for industrial fluid and gas filtration systems.
The micrometer (symbol: µm), commonly called a micron, equals one-thousandth of a millimeter. In industrial separation, the micron rating designates the largest physical aperture or path dimension through woven wire cloth.
Because the human eye cannot resolve particles smaller than ~40 microns without magnification, precision industrial filtration relies on calibrated stainless steel weaves (AISI 304, 316L, 904L) engineered down to 1–2 microns.
A finer micron rating stops smaller contaminants but increases initial clean differential pressure drop (ΔP). Balancing continuous throughput vs particle retention is vital to prevent premature blinding.
