Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) Guide

Corrosion resistance in stainless steel filtration wire cloth is primarily governed by chemical composition. PREN provides a validated theoretical index to calculate and compare localized pitting and crevice corrosion thresholds across aggressive media.

Standard calculation for super duplex wire alloys containing tungsten additions (such as 2507 and Zeron 100).

The Seawater Benchmark: Materials with a calculated PREN > 40 are metallurgically classified as resistant to pitting in direct marine and seawater immersion environments at ambient temperature.

Crevice Corrosion Factor

Wire mesh contains hundreds of contact intersections per square inch. For static seawater or halogenated media, specify minimum SS 316L or Duplex 2205 to prevent localized wire notch failure.
